The popular clothing chain, Cotton On has started a debate around the appropriateness of sex toy sales via their online store.

In the old times, purchasing a sex toy required going into an adult store anonymously and emerging with your purchase in a plain brown paper bag. With mainstream businesses like The Iconic, Priceline, and now Cotton On all stocking a selection of sex toys, things couldn’t be more different today.

Cotton On first announced in February that it would be selling a variety of sex toys and vibrators through its online store. Some customers, however, were offended by posts on the brand’s Instagram and Facebook pages on Wednesday.

“Treat yourself,” the caption on Facebook read, beside two photographs of the company’s sex toy line. Send a text to your best friend. Yes, we’re taking this seriously.” The vast majority of buyers complimented Cotton About for its “normalising” post on sex toys in Facebook and Instagram comments.

Another delighted consumer exclaimed, “Well hello Cotton On.”

“Not only my favorite things to wear every damn day, but now this,” another Instagram user wrote “Cotton On, Yasssssssssssssssssssssssss”

Although it should come as no surprise that adult buyers can purchase adult sex toys from a business whose major target market is adults, several customers were upset that Cotton On sold them and then advertised them on Facebook. “My 14-year-old has you on her Instagram and you, along with several other teenagers, would have seen these,” one mother commented.

There is also some negative feedback from the audiences there on Facebook.

“I believe it is a poor decision to sell this under your company, which sells children’s and youth clothing.

“I’m all for sexuality and buying these items if that’s your thing, but only as an adult, not a teen.”

Others agreed, calling the sale of X-rated toys in a store that sold children’s and teenager’s clothing “crazy.”

One concerned mother remarked, “My 10-year-old daughter loves shopping at Cotton On!”

Another purchaser claimed, “A business that offers kids’ apparel shouldn’t sell this crap.”

“️Healthy sexuality shouldn’t be a taboo topic but an opportunity for valuable life lessons and safety.”

Cotton On’s range of sex toys and vibrators are only available via its website under its “self love” section. Customers must first answer “yes” to a question about whether they are “sure you’re comfortable” because “the next pages include sex-related products and sexual wellness advice” before viewing the retailer’s sex toy inventory, which includes Abbie’s Vush vibrator.

Despite the fact that the company provides clothing for children and teenagers, its primary target demographic is adults between the ages of 18 and 30. Cotton On’s move to carry sex toys drew a “very favourable response,” according to the Daily Telegraph in February.
